For months, I have been thinking about Maddox’s first birthday party. I have lived on Pinterest since he was about 7 months old in order to properly prepare for the occassion. We decided to do a party based on The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. 
It is the cutest little book and we thought it would make for a nice party. When the time came, I scoured the internet looking for the perfect invitations. I finally settled on a style from Festivity Ink on Etsy. They looked like this:
They turned out perfectly and I received them, printed, in less than 3 days. You can not ask for better service!
Food was easy – just serve what the caterpillar ate! And boy did that little caterpillar eat! Fruit, Cherry pie, cupcakes, cake, sausage, cheese, etc. We had so much fun coming up with how to present these!
We decided to do cupcakes for our guest and a round 8″ cake for Maddox’s smash cake. I actually made both and was thrilled when they turned out okay! I did cheat and got the fondant caterpillar off of Etsy because I can not, will not, learn anything about fondant. My brain has a permanent barrier blocking me. Maybe I just need time to practice? Maddox had a blast at this party! He dug into his cake like a pro and had so much fun ripping the wrapping paper off of his gifts. 
Mommy and Daddy were excited to celebrate our sweet boy also!
And finally, for party favors, I baked vanilla almond cookies and packaged them up. This was my first time making iced cookies and working with royal icing. PHEW! What an experience that was…buttercream is a breeze compared to that big sticky mess. 
All in all, I would say that he had a great first birthday surrounded by family. What is your idea of the perfect first birthday?
